MEDICAL CODING.
Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The basic task of a clinical coder is to classify medical and health care concepts using a standardised classification. Inpatient, mortality events, outpatient episodes, general practitioner visits and population health studies can all be coded.
A Medical Coder requires a good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, a basic knowledge of clinical procedures and disease and injuries and other conditions. A clinical coder uses a set of codes for assigning codes.
International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a set of codes which is published by the WHO (World Health Organisation) for morbidity and morality statistics, reimbursement systems and automated decision support in healthcare. ICD codes indicate a patient's condition, the location and severity of an injury or symptom, and if the visit is related to an initial or subsequent encounter. For instance ICD code E75.22 denotes Gaucher disease .
Gaucher disease is the result of a buildup of certain fatty substances in certain organs, particularly your spleen and liver. This causes these organs to enlarge and can affect their function. The fatty substances also can build up in bone tissue, weakening the bone and increasing the risk of fractures. Gaucher disease is passed down from parents to children. It is caused by a problem with the GBA gene. It is an autosomal recessive disorder.
