Duties of Medical Coding

MEDICAL CODING

                      Medical Coding is the transformation of healthcare procedures like diagnosis, treatment received, prescriptions, equipment used by a patient into universally accepted codes. The codes are then used to maintain patient records, to bill insurance companies and government health plans and to track public health. Medical coders use classification systems to assign numerical codes to patient records. These codes are mainly ICD, CPT and HCPCS.

                     Medical coders are responsible for coding patient medical records for insurance and hospital record keeping. They review patient records for accuracy and completeness, assign codes for diagnosis and procedures, and ensure the accuracy and completeness of the coded data. They must be knowledgeable of coding systems and the changes in codes due to advances in medicine and technology. They must stay up to date with coding conventions, medical terminology, and coding system updates. Other duties of medical coders include auditing and reviewing medical records for accuracy, tracking coding accuracy and integrity, and responding to coding related inquiries from physicians and other medical staff.

Responsibilities of a Medical Coder includes:

1. Check the accuracy and completeness of the medical records.

2. Convert medical procedures and diagnoses into a common coding set.

3. Assign modifiers, coding categories, and abstract data from medical records.

4. Investigate and fix errors in billing and code information.

5. Monitor billing and coding information to ensure correctness and quality.

6. Keep medical records and coding databases compliant with HIPAA.

7. Create, send, and keep track of insurance reimbursement claims.

8. Help with medical coding audits and deal with inconsistencies in coding.

9. To maintain accuracy and compliance, monitor and change coding methods.

10. Keep your coding expertise current with regards to emerging technology and medical procedures.
